Happy birthday to 1953: Ron Howard, born in Duncan, Oklahoma to actors Rance and Jean Howard, best known for his role in "Happy Days". Ron moved to Hollywood in 1959 and first appeared on television "Playhouse 90". By 1960, he played Opie Taylor in "The Andy Griffith show" (1960 - 1968). By 1973, he played Steve Bollander in "American Graffiti", and next year, in "Happy Days", where he played Richie Cunningham till 1980 when he signed-up with NBC abruptly left the sitcom while it was very popular -- about the time that he suddenly began losing his hair and began looking like an old man, so that he had to constantly wear a hat or anything else to hide his head. He went on to shoot the television movie "Skyward" with Bette Davis, and then "Nightshift" (1982). He also shot the "risque" Disney company, Touchstone's debut movie "Splash" (1984) with Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah, which incidentally had a fanastic beginning part in which Darryl swam in the water like she can breath water, although she didn't move as graceful and as fast as a fish, which could easily have been done by dragging her with a piano wire. Then came "Cocoon" (1985), in which old folks kill the sleeping extraterrestrials and extraterrestrials who were trying to rescue them decide to reward the old folks for killing their friends. While Ron had some flops, he made a successful comeback with the failed lunar mission "Apollo 13" (1995) with a great simulation of how real astronauts behave when gravity is eliminated.
1984: Joanie Cunningham (played by Erin Moran) and Chachi Arcola (played by Scott Baio) get married on "Happy Days", a comedy set in the 1950's with "aaaeh", Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli (played by Henry Winkler), Howard Cunningham (played by Tom Bosley) and wife Marion Cunningham (played by Marion Ross) in the final season on ABC television network. Also in this episode, Fonzie adopts a son. Ron Howard who played Richie Cunningham only stayed during 1974 - 1980 and 1984. His buddies Warren "Potsie" Webber (played by Anson Williams) stayed during 1974 to 1983 while Ralph Malph (played by Don Most) stayed during 1974 to 1980 and 1984. And naturally, Arnold (Pat Morita) stayed during 1975 to 1976 and occasionally from 1982 to 1983 when Al took Arnold's place. Happy Days original aired long before its first telecast on January 15, 1974 when it appeared in "Love, American Style~~~~~" in February 1972 under the title "Love, and the Happy Days". It turned, in effect, into the pilot for the series where Fonzie was a minor part. But eventually, The Fonz became an even bigger character than everyone else. Unlike normal comedies where the characters never age, Happy Days had people growing older and the high schooler Richie went to college to study journalism by the end of the 1977 season. By 1980 season, Richie was out of college and into the army and hence unseen on stage, although his love-interest, Lori Beth gave birth to Richie Junior in 1981. Eventually, the 1950's settings became the 1960's with the show focusing attention on Joanie and Chachi (which spun-off "Joanie Loves Chachi" in 1982 while remaining attached to Happy Days). By the 1984 final season, Richie came back on the show and now wants to become a screenwriter, while The Fonz adopts Danny. By the last episode of July 12, 1984, Joanie and Chachi are married and Richie thanks the audience and the show ends, happily-days ever-after. ##>put song here.
On May 19. It was back on this date in 1977 that British entertainer and television host David Frost had the first-ever interview with Richard "I am a crook" Nixon aired on television, three years after Richard resigned from his office of the president for fear of an impending impeachment over the Watergate scandal. David paid Richard $600,000 for the rights and tried to get Richard to admit that he committed a crime. Condensed from four days of interviews, poor sap David was out-maneuvered by Richard who made-out everything he said sound natural and logical. The closest that David got Richard to apologize for the crime was when Richard said "I let the country down"." Not much, but David managed to get 45 million television viewing audience to tune-in on the interview. Now the always-cap wearing movie director Ron Howard, who baldly goes where no man had gone before -- as in directing "Apollo 13" -- made the movie "Frost/Nixon" with Michael Sheen playing David and Frank Langella as the tense Richard who voiced all sorts of insinuations and inuendoes that were not in the original interview. But then this movie isn't an adaptation of the original interview where Richard could have almost passed for being joly -- considering how grumpy he always looked, even when he appeared in "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in" television comedy show, but Peter Morgan's theatrical play "Frost/Nixon" that has a sappy and tense Richard sweating profusely.
